Penny Smyth attended Simon Fraser University for a bachelor's degree. She moved to the University of Alberta to obtain her MD, and completed residency training in Neurology at the U of A. She moved back to Vancouver to do a two year fellowship in multiple sclerosis at the UBC MS Clinic. She stayed on staff at Vancouver General Hospital and UBC for years, and moved back to the University of Alberta in 2008. Since that time, she has worked as an MS specialist at the Northern Alberta MS Clinic. She participates in local and multi-centre clinical trials, helping in knowledge translation of research projects. Dr. Smyth is very involved with medical education, previously serving as a program director for neurology residents and is now Associate Dean, Professionalism for the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. She is still very active with the national EndMS Training Network for research trainees in multiple sclerosis and works closely with the MS Society.
